Peter Long started playing around with Motorcycles in the ´late 1960s Lived in Ilford, Essex. Not that the bikes at that time were worth a lot but the interest was there. So I started buying, spares and complete bikes.
A good friend, at the time was Robert Cotton lived in a flat at Ilford Broadway, then at Chadwell Heath, near Romford father was a policeman. He worked on Saturdays at Ted Broads Speed Shop on Eastern Av. Ilford, and later at J.J. Doubles M/Cycle Shop Two photos show dark haired Robert Cotton In Teds Yard on the now, very rare Yamaha RD56 Works Racing Bike. Year would be 1965. This machine was ridden by Phil Read, Bill Ivy and Reg Everett at Brands Hatch Oct 1965. All Bikes prepared by Ted Broad. Sitting on same Nr 4 RD56 16 year old Peter Long.
Just 100 yards from were I lived, Staines Road, IIford, lived Phil Pick. The now guru of the BSA / Triumph 3 Cylinder models. I worked for a short time at Longstaffs M/Cycle shop, Woodford, Essex, then at Smiths Motors, Ilford, then Eddy Grimsteads, Ilford at weekends selling parts to the local guys. My first bike a Gilera 175cc, then the interest turned to TRIUMPH TWINS.

Jimmy Gilligan of Green Street he knocked on our door one day, and said i know where a few old bikes are laying. He was 12 years old ! After this he worked with us for some 8 years, a long friendship with Jim and his family is still there.

Being born in Barking Essex we thought it a good place to have our shop. We rented 62 and 64 Ripple Road Barking a real dump of a place, on a 6 months renewable lease, as the council wanted to demolish the whole block. Showing one of the part restored 1940 Matchless G3S and G80S discovered at the rear of a Police Station, Rainham Essex at a well known scrap yard on the A13.

This was a batch of approx 20 machines ( Brand New ) but sadly stored outside + tons of War Dept Spares M20 / Matchless.

a 350cc Rudge 4 Valve, in bad condition, found in a rear garden in Dagenham.
1981 Two young kids came into the shop and said, we know where an old bike is. ( This happened many times ) We paid 5 Pounds + a packet of Rolos and a Mars Bar for this information ! Good Old Times and prices. The Rudge was sold to a Dutch guy called Gerald Amelsfort, also the Vincent Comet that Jimmy is sitting
on, Gerald was always looking for a bargain at our shop. ( A very careful man
with his money ) We used to tease him because he had a car that ran on gas.
( In 1981 not heard of in England ) The staff nicknamed him PILOT LIGHT.
He never could take a joke! I think I can still hear him crying, because I would not go down on the price on a Mid 1939s 350cc Velocette KSS.
We took it to Beaulieu Auto Jumble that year, and was sold within one hour. Strange but met Gerald at Bike Jumble, in Amsterdam on the 17 Nov 2013.

The two shops 62/64 Ripple Road Barking, was very succesfull, we managed to obtain a licence to have a M.O.T. Testing Station. ( One side , was for Servicing Japanese machines, the other British parts ) Our manager at that time, was my life long friend FRANK SHELL. He bought a DBD 500cc Gold Star 1972 from Eddy Grimsteads ( Eastern Av Ilford ). After it came in contact with a hard object. Then rebuilt by Frank for the 2nd time.

At that time we both attempted to develope various products for English bikes. One very successfull product was the ( two in to one ) Triumph SIDEWINDER exhaust pipe assy. Also produced as single silencers,
for Matchless, Guzzie and various Harleys.
Another venture was gold plating on Alloy Castings Primary C.Cases, Rocker Boxes etc. Colin French owner of Kingsley Chrome.

Undertook the plating, we had a exchange service on covers, so customers did not have to wait for there parts. This was successfull for approx 4 years.

Colin French on his very rare 1919 Harley Davidson. ( Harley Davidson Model W, Sport Model 584cc Flat Twin manufactured from 1919 to 1923 )
We part restored this machine, we remember spraying all the main cycle parts, and our parts manufacturer ( DICK JOHNSTON S. Ockendon ) fabricated the complicated, Hand Lever Operated, Baffle Silencer System.
This Harley Davidson won many awards, it is featured on the cover of
'THE CLASSIC MOTOR CYCLE Magazine' September 1983.
Won the best machine Banbury Run that year.
Photos are the Original taken by the 'CLASSIC MOTOR CYCLE' team at Kempton Park Race Course.
Some years later was sold to a customer in Australia / or New Zealand ? From the early 1980s a good friendship developed between Colin and Peter.
And many Customers will remember him, for the fact that if you sent him ten items to chrome eight would go missing ! and give you back the two, six months later. But a great guy.
Late in life he married PETRA LINKHORST, a German girl.
Sadly Colin passed away five years ago.
Petra decided to return to Germany, lived with us for a year.
Now lives in Emmendingen Germany.

After Frank Shell moved on, our next manager was MIKE MORGAN, Barking Essex. This Triton was Mikes own bike won 1st prize at the 1st and 2nd KENT CUSTOM SHOW Middle 80s. ( featured in many Magazines ) Mikes bike was used as a test machine for many of our products, Alloy Tanks, Seats, Exhaust assy, Copper, Gold Plating etc. taken at Barking Abbey grounds, 'Auto Jumble' at Enfield Pagent Motoring Show, London.
Young blond guy on stand ( sorry do not remember his name ) worked with us for 6 months as a trainee in conjunction with Barking Countcil. ( youth Training Project ) At the end of 6 months you get no job, ( as we could not offer one , from day one ! ) and the unemployment figures are lower. Typical Goverment Bullshit ! He phoned us at home Some years ago, seems he is doing well in the banking world.
Another of many so called trainees, was a young kid that we named STICK ( he was a bit thin ) from Dagenham. He must have learnt something, as he now rebuilds Triumphs, he sent a photo to us some years ago, seems he is now being fed. Hello STICK, and son of STICK. Keep well.

Over the last 30 years, we have unearthed some rare and interesting machines and parts.
Peter ( around 1987 ? ) with a BSA M24 Gold Star Engine bought from a guy in Braintree Essex.
It was fitted into a Featherbed frame.
( Can not remember for sure )
He removed engine, we bought it.
We still know the customer who we sold it to. Its still sitting in his living room. ( its a sad world )
Scott Sociable Engine
Another rare find was the remains of a 1919 Scott Sociable, discovered in Essex / Herts area ( around 1986 ) complete engine / gearbox, dashboard, steering wheel, radiator, some frame, and body parts.
Some seven years later, we bought another engine / gearbox unit at the Classic Bike Show Auction. Both lots was sold to a friend in Italy who wants to complete the machine. There is one at the Coventry Transport Museum ( but replica ). Another at Beaulieu Motor Museum.
Possibly only five or six are in running order.
Approx ten across the world in parts.
At that time early 70s / 80s / 90s we hade a yard overflowing with various Vintage Classic Bikes.

The early 1970s we advertised a lot in the only publication that was any good MOTORCYCLE NEWS a monthly newspaper. For the advertisers every year we was invited to wine and dine at the Ludgate Cellers in the heart of London. Ted Bloomfield from M.C.S Motorcycles Leytonstone, was one of the largest british bike dealers in the east England, we traded for many years, sadly he passed away a few years ago.
Ron Bloomfield ( Teds brother Suzuki Agent ) is still going strong, we spoke at the Stafford CLASSiC BIKE SHOW 2012 after some 15 years.

1980 my life long friend Trevor Dwight wanted to go racing , using a Yamaha T.D.I. You could not call it sponsoring !
But we gave him a tube of Hermitite and painted his bike, Trevor always helped us out from the age of 16, at present
has a BSA B40 and a TRIUMPH T.140. When somebody gives him the phone money, he will ring us. Needless to say we are still waiting for that call ! See you Trevor at Stafford.

Richard Shell is the brother of our 1st Manager Frank Shell. A remarkable English / Italian Family. Met Frank in the early 1960s, at his workshop at the rear of their house in Mortlake Road. His mother Anna, owned a restaurant in East London, a real entrepreneur, gave me much inspiration. Anna played host to many of Franks friends - Motorcycle fans, supplying gallons of coffee at weekends. At that time, John Thomas was a student and lived at Mortlake Road. He was the inteligent one of our group.( His words not ours ! ) ( He could write his name and address in joined up writing, also in Welsh ! ) John and Anna were a couple for many years, and eventually married. Sadly Anna left us all in 2013. A great loss to all who knew her. Mary and i are glad to have known you all as friends. You have been a great part of our lives.
Talking of sponsoring, we started to sell parts on the Continent 1981 ( mainly the German speaking lands ), at the various Moto Shows and Auto Jumbles. As we was able to offer our goods and services, at a cheaper rate than the local dealers, it was very succesfull, in fact for many years we had no real competition, and of course not very popular with some of the old traders.
One of the many good friends, we made was Franz Eckel and his sons Dieter and Werner. The family was very well known in club circles, for competing and collecting.
ECKEL had a large collection of motorcycles and spares, in fact we had never seen so many J.A.P. engines in one place. ( his celler)
One rare bird was a 1927 H.R.D. 500cc ohv. ( with J.A.P. engine )
Very few of these machines are in existance. Raced on many circuits in Europe.

Dieter was a real J.A.P. fan, has a few grasstrack machines.
He rode various vintages bike under the Cornucopia-Enterprises banner, mostly in England. One was a very fast BSA Special 1933 500cc OHV. No its not a home built machine, it was produced by BSA 1933 to 1935. Using all the good bits from various models. ( Model Nr W33-9 ) Another machine from Dieter, a brilliant restorer and rider.
Dieter and his wife Katrine can be found a most Auto Jumbles and shows including the BREMEN CLASSIC MOTORSHOW.

His family has Cuban / Chinese ancestors. ( Thanks for giving us wonderfull Granchildren ) Elvis lived and worked in Camagüey, Havana ( Cuba ) before moving to Gran Canaria. That adds more mixed blood to our family, so far it includes English, Welsh, Scottish, Australian, Canadian, American, Cuban, German, Jewish.
With this mixture it is almost impossible to have any racial issues !
Our searching for spares all over Europe, took us to some interesting lands. A few trips to Switzerland running across the border with spares, in 1992 it was not easy. Frequent runs to and from Motorcycle Museum HILTI Switzerland
( Owner Joe HILTI sadly no longer with us) was a gold mine of rare parts.

In fact Dieter Eckel and his father Franz bought the BSA Special, and the H.R.D. from Joe HILTI. ( in the 1970s )
We always had a great interest in V.Twins H.Davidson and Indians, when Peter was between 18 and 26, he started to collect parts.( Mainly Indians ) most bought incomplete, and in boxes.
One complete 340B Indian Chief 1940 was completed ten years ago. Purchased from Dave Minton ( Motorcycle Journalist ) in the late 1970s who lived in Ilford Essex.

In the 70s Peters love was the Pre Unit Triumphs. The 1960 T120R shown in photo was used for many trips to Europe, later sold to a customer in Australia.

Ray made a few trips with his good wife Betty ( on a Motorcycle ) to Czechoslovakia 1987 to visit Jiri Horice in Brno. His firm was called Vintage Replica. And still is going strong, over the years we have helped each other with spares and information. A really helpfull nice guy.
Ray Newton produced all the Cornucopia spares Catalogues from day one ( 1978 was the first ) a wonderfull person, missed by all, passed away 2005.

1980 we went into partner ship with ARTHER SKINNER.
Owner of Abbey Motorcycles ( Waltham Abbey ) and manufacturer of special tuning parts for TRITONS and NORTONS. Trading under the name of M. and D. Products, almost 90% of the parts selling to the motorcycle trade. Mainly WASSELL ( Motor Cycle Spares Wholesale).
Many of you will remember the Allen Screw sets, Alloy Timing Gears. Alloy V. Caps, Dural Alloy push rods etc. A little known fact is that Arther was one of the first to produce bolt on TRITON parts. His publication "How to Tune a TRIUMPH" ( In the 1970s ) make very interesting reading. Arther had a large collection of Motor Cycles. With our contacts in Europe ( and the prices of English Motorcycles at that time high ) we sold many of Arthers machines, he is a real NORTON enthusiast. Sales included a nice 1970 Velocette Thruxton, in fact it put a smile on his face, he is still smiling today. We completed many continental shows, had some good times, Arther is a brilliant engineer, glad to have known him, learnt a lot on the way.

Another short partnership we entered into was with, Francoise Genechten. ( Belgium Motorcycle Dealer ) Our trips to Europe in the early 1980s was frequent, passing through France, Belguim, Holland, delivering spares on our way to our base in Germany.
A regular delivery was in Arendonk, Belgium Froancoise Genechten ( and son Frederick, who at that time was around 12 years old ! )
A dealer in Greece made contact who had tons of New Britsh Parts.
Italy, and Greece from the 1970s on, was the scrap yard of Europe, anything steel, including tons of Britsh, German, Italian motorcycles and cars, spares, Japanese bike's had arrived, there was little interest in the older parts.
A few clever guys stockpiled the stuff till the prices increased. But a few shillings was involved to have more buying power. We became partners. The amount and range was unbelivible. Mostly War Dept, but many complete machines. I remember one store that was stacked with 600 Lucas Headlamps 6 Inch W.D Type, 1,000 Canvas grips, 1,000 Convoy Lamps etc....
Around 20 tons was shipped from Greece to Belgium, and with the help of contacts in the Belguim customs we had no real problems.
Remember this was pre open frontier times, normaly the customs would give you a real hard time.

My Mother and Father moved to Australia in 1974, following my Sister who Emigrated in 1971. Therefore Mary and i have been down under to Australia a few times. Have always had many loyal customers over the last 40 years.

At times we would stop over in Tokio Japan, and visit customers. One being Tysae Jinda who owned THE BONESHAKER LTD. We supplied many parts to Tysae for many years His Shop was in Setagayaku Tokyo, it was like stepping into any
English M. Cycle in the 1930s.

The "Classic Bike Show Stafford" is a must for most British bike fans. The first for us, was when it was held in Bolton late 1970s. Trevor Brown and Ray Newton helped out at most of the large shows. Trevor Brown worked a the BARKING LIBRARY in Ripple Road, only 100 yards from our shop. His wife put her motorcycle in every year for a new M.O.T.. That was around 1978, the start of our friendship. Trevor started working at EAST HAM Librarary 1966 then WEST HAM, ILFORD, etc. Ended up in Barking as head of Library and Heritage Services for Barking and Dagenham Borough. Played a big part in acquiring and developing new library and community sites for town centre redevelopment. ( we call him "the REVEREND TREVOR" as he thinks he is close to God ! ) In his working days ( Now retired 2008 ) he had some 500 staff to boss around. ( Strange ! some of us get the impression we are still part of the 500 ) Since our move to Germany 1998, Trevor takes care of most of the U.K. work. Over the years has been a good soul mate, much appreciated.

a very nice late 1920`s Grindlay Peerless München 1984.
On our travels we met some really interesting people. One is Peter Stark
from München, run a wonderfull workshop in the 1980`s. Not sure that he
would admit to it! But, Karsten from Southern Division trained there under
Peter in the late 1970`s.

live in the U.K. ( As many thousands who married, stayed in this area
Niedersachsen British Garrison towns Hameln, Detmold , Paderborn,
Hereford, Bielefeld, Osnabrück and many more, helped the German
economy, and possible kept the Russians at bay ! )
Nigil completed many of our line drawings for our adverts in
THE OLD BIKE MART and the CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE in the
1990s and manufactures many of our products. Has a few very nice
British Motorcycles Triumph T100, Harley Davidson and a wonderfull
BSA 1946 250cc C11 Original Condition !

We decided to move our entire stock of parts, ( including workshop machines, tools etc. ) in 1998.
This amounted to approx 140 Tons. Three 45 foot Containers from Holland, delivered the goods.

Gatton has been our 2nd home for many years, one of the largest Auto Jumbles or " Swap Meets " takes place at Gatton ( Gatton Show Ground ) has been running for the last 31 years, needless to say we visit this event most years. It has now moved to Laidley, some 4 miles out side Gatton. This is a Motorcycle Event only and a must for most bike fans. The Organiser Brian Holzigal, is very helpfull should you want to visit. Suffered with Tempertures around 40-42 D, not good when one must work !
We completed two Swap Meets. ( Motorcycle )
One of the largest Motorcycle only Events Laidley, Queensland.
A few years ago it was held at Gatton Show Ground.
( walking Distance from My Mothers House ! )
We also had a Stand at the ESK.

He lived and worked at NHULUNBUY or GOVE PENNINSULA in the Northern Territorys during the 1980s. ( a great Area )
Retired some years ago, but fit as 50 year old.
( Most of the Time he wears no Shoes, a funny sight when he was putting out the fire ! )
All his Life he worked as Heavy Plant Operator, Road and Mining Industry, at NABALCO PTY LTD ( renamed ALCAN GOVE ) Mining Bauxite to make Aluminium, also worked at BACHAMM PLANT IPSWICH.
In 1970 the YIRRKALA Aboriginal People from Gove took the Australian Goverment to Court concerning mining on there Land. "Tiger" worked with the YIRRKALA Aboriginal Misson People, ARNHEM Knows the Aboriginal Way of Life, over the Years have learnt a lot from him.
